Apocalyptic thinking does lend itself to the idea of repeated iterations of the same basic drama, perhaps with the same paradox always threatening: each iteration seems like the Last Battle against evil but then seems to need fighting all over again. Perhaps devotional reading of Daniel and its whole genre should concentrate on the message of hope against hope in dark times, not on fitting the dreamlike or trancelike narrative on to the dry details of reality
Apocalypse can be fun, too. I really enjoy singing Charles Wesley’s ‘Lo He comes with Clouds Descending’ even though I don’t expect to hear the deep wailings of the wicked any time soon
