As an atheist and engineer I find this debate silly. The calendar we use was invented by people whose lives revolved around their faith, so of course the date system they invented does to. It's a historical fact. Using BC/AD doesn't mean I agree with their faith, it means we're still using the calendar they invented. If someone else invents a new calendar and succeeds in getting it adopted world-wide then I'll use their naming conventions. Retconning the existing system with new names is a disingenuous pretense at best and justifiably seen as erasing history.
