I know this is 13 years old, but thank you for your contribution, I read it in preparing a paper for class im taking on teaching the bible.
Just thought I'd point out that God told Moses (the chief) to send spies into Canaan, so the assertion that the practice of reconnaissance is petty and cowardly is not supported by the text...I have often found obedience to be the more difficult choice, not a short cut or easy way out.
