I have always had an issue with this story and was happy to find this page explaining others shared the same views. First off, (my belief) there was no "fall of man". In order for this to be true, mankind had to know that disobeying is wrong, but since the forbidden fruit has not been eaten, mankind "disobeying" becomes moot. They do not understand this. I've always believed that the serpent (not Satan as many push) was actually there to save mankind and prevent then from a live of mindless slavery. Nude, and ignorant, mankind had no other purpose. "Surely die" was another lie from god. If he said they would die, she should have killed them. Another note is that the author (we will go with Moses), knows who Satan is and would use his name - see other scriptures throughout the bible. But instead it was a "beast". The other issue that many people over look was that possibly Moses used the term "serpent" much like we use the phrase "snake in the grass" as a derogatory term describing who it was that confronted eve. Just some fundamental things to ponder.
