If John the Elder was not John son of Zebedee, and he was as close to Peter as the gospel indicates, why is he otherwise absent from any Biblical recognition? Most importantly, when the 11 chose to replace Judas Iscariot only weeks after the last supper, when Peter inquired of the "disciple who Jesus loved" and when Peter was fishing with "the disciple who Jesus loved", why was this obviously closest of all disciples yet not one of the Twelve even considered to replace Judas? And, what is a Judean non-fisherman in the boat with Peter fishing? This is evidence Bauckham does not address.
