But what to make of the beginning of the Damascus Document which states that the faithful remnant of Israel "were like blind men" groping their way for 20 years before the appearance of the Teacher? Where is that 20 years in this scheme if Hyrcanus II "had been the high priest of the Jewish nation for over three decades (76-67, 63-40 BCE)" before his exile and disfigurement in 40 BCE?
