Does it seem that the Deuteronomic conception of the Baal cult as fundamentally foreign to Israel, symbolised by the hated Jezebel, and of the cult of Yahweh = El as utterly constitutive, must be called into question in both its aspects?
An eccentric point - Jezebel was laid low by Elisha but it is thought that Dido of Carthage was of the same royal house, being Jezebel’s great-niece or something such. Virgil thought that her real name was Elissa/Elisha and presumably got that idea from some tradition or other. Yet it would be surprising if the descendants of Ethbaal used the name of such a devastatingly hostile person for one of their own family
